Core Focus

The goal of this lesson is not simply to make a double crochet stitch. The key is to understand how double crochet differs from single crochet: double crochet begins with an extra yarn-over before inserting the hook, and the loops are worked off in two stages. In wire crochet, the main challenges are also keeping stitch height consistent, inserting the hook accurately, turning cleanly between rows, and learning how to extend the stitch height in the later part of the lesson.

What You’ll Learn

  • Recognize the visual characteristics of double crochet: taller stitches, a more open structure, and stronger vertical extension.
  • Master the full movement sequence: yarn over → insert the hook → catch the wire and pull up a loop → work the loops off in two stages.
  • Build the first row of double crochet on a foundation chain and understand the purpose of the turning chain.
  • Learn how to turn the work, begin a new row, and identify the correct insertion point for the next row.
  • Understand a variation of double crochet: extending the loops and relaxing the tension to create a lighter, more petal-like structure.

01 | Understand What Changes in Double Crochet

The video first shows several practice samples to demonstrate how different stitches directly change the size of the openings, the density of the fabric, and the overall stitch height.

The value of double crochet is not simply that the stitch is taller. It creates more vertical space in the wire fabric, making the structure lighter and more open. This makes it especially useful for petals, leaves, and forms that need a stronger sense of extension.

02 | Begin with a Stable Foundation Chain

Start with a slip knot, then work a short foundation chain. Do not make the foundation chain too tight, or it will be difficult to insert the hook when working the first row of double crochet. At the same time, avoid making it too loose, as excessive looseness can make the stitch height harder to control.

03 | The Core Double Crochet Sequence

Double crochet can be understood as a repeating sequence of movements:

Step 1 | Yarn Over Before Inserting the Hook

Compared with single crochet, one of the most important differences is that you yarn over before inserting the hook. This extra wire length creates the height needed for the taller stitch.

Step 2 | Insert into the Target Stitch and Pull Up a Loop

Insert the hook into the target stitch, catch the working wire, and pull it back through. At this point, several loops will be on the hook. Avoid suddenly tightening the wire.

Step 3 | Work the Loops Off in Stages

Do not pull through all the loops at once. Double crochet is formed by catching the wire and pulling through the loops in stages, which gradually creates the taller vertical stitch.

Step 4 | Repeat and Keep the Stitch Height Consistent

The main challenge in continuous double crochet is not whether you can complete the stitch, but whether the height and tension remain consistent from one stitch to the next.

Movement Reminder | Yarn over → Insert → Pull up a loop → Work the loops off in stages → Adjust the height.

What you are really practicing is consistency of movement, not speed.

Summary

The basic logic of double crochet is simple: yarn over first, then insert the hook; after pulling up the wire, work the loops off in two stages.

First make this sequence stable and repeatable. Then focus on keeping the stitch height consistent, turning cleanly between rows, and developing the extended, petal-like variations introduced later.
